To use KDM rather than GDM, either remove GDM (aptitude remove gdm) or tell 
Debian to use KDM (dpkg-reconfigure kdm).

I'm not sure what the problem with the nVidia drivers is; try looking 
at /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
