I don't know that it has anything to do with all of that. But if you build QT
from source, there is a configure option to specifically enable GIF support.
If you build it without that option, then all KDE apps will give you only a
broken image symbol where the GIF ought to be. This has been true since the
early days of QT. For whatever reasons, the people who built the distro may
have left it out, either intentionally or unintentionally.
