I can't even get my CD-ROM to work correctly although my ZIP (ATA 250)
works perfectly. So, I really don't know what to tell you.

On my system, which is built from source, if I don't start: "messagebus"
& "haldaemon" the behavior of the (automatic) DeskTop device icons
changes. However, if I try to use them, they don't work and I get a
message saying that I need Hal installed.

However, I find that the old style manually created DeskTop icons for
devices still work. That is, if you right click the DeskTop background
and choose:

Create New -> Link to Device -> <device_type>

and properly set up a device icon that it should work correctly.

Note that you probably need to have an "fstab" entry for this to work.
