So, since replacing the cpu in my machine and upgrading the bios I have
had trouble getting my printer installed. USB detection is enabled in the
BIOS. 1st thing is that it takes a very long time for the list of
manufacterers and models to load (not normal even with old cpu) and then
the recommended driver fails to install (foomatic+gimprint). So I choose
the (foomatic+gimprint-ijs) and it loads but it won't print. I go to system settings>printers and see that the printer is not started. I right click on printer and choose start printer and after a few moments it quits. I have tried all of the drivers listed for my printer and none will even print a test page.

Charlie, I think we need some more details.
Which distro?
Which printer?
How did you set the printer up?
Is it local or on a LAN?
Have you tried localhost:631 in a browser (login as root when asked)?
Anne
Distro is Kubuntu , printer is epson 980 and it is local printer. I should say that the printer had been working fine until I pulled the usb cable and connected it to my laptotp where the printer installed without a problem. The laptop is running the exact same version of Kubuntu and KDE 3.5.2. I have used KDE print a number of times with no problems until this.
