The short answer to the first question is that the two installations are
separate.
The simplest way (as far as I am concerned) is to boot into level 3 as a
user and then either startx to open 3.4.2 or run a batch file containing
the lines from the README to start 3.5beta1.
I'm sure that there are other ways to accomplish the same thing, but
this is how I do it.
