Try the command-line alsamixer. Sometimes you can see there what the
problem is. 'M' anywhere denotes muted. If you can solve it that way do
`alsactl store', and it may be necessary to put `alsactl restore' into
your startup files.
If it doesn't solve it, try the alsa mailing list -
alsa-user at lists.sourceforge.net
