[kde-linux] Problem with standby/suspend/hibernate on Dell Inspiron 8000

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 running Centos 4.2 and KDE 3.3.

I have turned off "lid close actions" in the BIOS.

If I set "lid close actions" in the KDE control panel to anything other
than "off", closing the lid darkens the screen.  When I open the lid,
nothing I do (other than cycling power) brings the system back.

Any suggestions?
