[kde-linux] Konqueror freezes when used as file browser

I've compiled kde 3.4,.1 from source and konqueror works great as a web 
browser but freezes up if I try to use it as a file browser. Is there 
some component that it needs to browse files and directories that I 
haven't built or is broken ?
Note - as a web browser it leaves firefox for dead - rendering is more 
accurate, and it appears to be bugfree.
