That bug is for RealPlay 8 plugin, so may not be relevant. Reading through
the comments prompted me to try some other things though, thanks.

I commented out BOTH audio/x-pn-realaudio and audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin in
mozpluggerrc. To my surprise the stream played! (In RealPlayer 10 plugin I
assume.) I also noticed that my Mandrake 10.0 box had
audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin commented out in mozpluggerrc, but that
mozplugger launched a standalone app anyway. So is the problem perhaps
that the stream is sending the wrong mimetype, and that this is confusing
konqueror but not firefox?

I should have stopped there, but I decided to see if entering the missing
filename patterns for x-pn-realaudio and x-pn-realaudio-plugin. That was a
mistake because the stream no longer plays. I removed the patterns, but the
stream still won't play.

This is very confusing. I think I'll make firefox my default browser, it
behaves much more rationally than konqueror.

btw the BBC website has changed since original posting. To find a page that
needs a plugin, go to eg http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/atoz/index.shtml#a and
find a Listen link that opens in other frame.
