Make certain that if startkde exists, that it is in your PATH.  I don't know 
how you installed KDE but when I compiled it (rather than install from debs), 
it ended up in /usr/local/kde/bin which was not in my PATH, so I had to add 
that to my PATH to get KDE to start.
