Hi Eric,

I have no idea how to really investigate this problem, but I think somewhere
to find people who might would be the kde-kiosk list (although it's mostly
about Kiosk settings, and locking down KDE, it is the most likely place I can
think of to find lots of people running thin client setups.) I have taken
the liberty of forwarding your message there.

(To kde-kiosk, if anyone has any help here, please be sure to CC Eric on the
reply, even if he wishes to subscribe to this list, he's not here yet :)

Hi,

I'm running into a weird problem when running KDE 3.2 on a FreeBSD 5.x
diskless client. KDM comes up on the diskless client and allows the user to
login. Everything seems normal until the login process is finished and the
taskbar comes up with almost nothing on it in the way of the traditional KDE
icons, I.E. Konqueror, K-mail, shell, etc. In addition the K menu is as
barren as the taskbar with only the "run command", "quick browser", "logout"
and "lock screen" options on it. I didn't have this problem with KDE 3.1
under the same conditions.

The diskless client allocates memory filesystems at boot time for the
various directories it needs write access to.. /var and /tmp. When I
attempt to run the control center "kcontrol", the control center window
comes up, but it's missing everything in the left pane. In checking the
.xsession-error log I see the following error messages that I think has
something to do with this problem. They are as follows:

ksplash: WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name
passed to the constructor!

QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used

QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used

QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used

QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used

kbuildsycoca running...

Launched ok, pid = 542

_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root

QFont::setPointSize: Point size <= 0 (-3)

kcontrol: WARNING: No K menu group with X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings found !
Defaulting to Settings

I believe it may have something to do with the read-only root and /usr
filesystems that the diskless client boots and operates from on the FreeBSD
5.x server. I can log in using exactly the same procedure on the FreeBSD
5.x server and it yields a normal KDE environment with nothing missing. I'm
using Xorg (The FreeBSD 5.x branch has recently changed to Xorg instead of
XFree86). Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions. They are much
appreciated.

Regards,

Eric
