I think the biggest problem you may have with this is idiot-proofing! 

Things work much better if my profile is spelled the same way both times. Problem was that the profile directory was named profile3 and the profile name was Profile3

Thanks - I can't wait to teach in a lab where the desktop settings are controlled so that students are forced to work on java programming rather than design of their desktops!
