Sorry for not responding to your previous message, I wanted to look into it

I agree it makes little sense, but it would be just as surprising if a 
.desktop file that was copied to the Desktop would simply vanish.

Yup, this is broken indeed. When I said works for me I had tested it with 
$HOME/Desktop, but not with share/kdesktop/Desktop Fix attached.
