I would opt for the removal, since: 
- no benefit in an option, that is not usable, since the protocol is gallery3
specific and cannot be used with other systems
- the more options and features the less usable an application is

I do not agree with the Gnome idea of eliminating more and more options, but
senseless things should indeed get removed. 

Just my 2 cents...
