i think this is a duplicate of bug 333624 

even if digikam would use an application key for geonames.org,  there would be
a limit on the number of requests. in the above bug i attached an
implementation which uses http://open.mapquestapi.com/elevation/ which also
requires a key for the application but does not seem to have a limit on the
number of requests in a given timeframe.
