Would it be worth writing an enhancement request for that, or is this too far 
off (in terms of requirement and / or implementation effort) to be taken into 
consideration?

Well I actually do need JPG output as my print service does not support 
creating photo prints from any other file type. Meanwhile I decided to go for 
a "workaround", print the whole images to PDF at A0 image size, import this to 
Gimp and then store each layer to a (large) JPG. A bit clumsy, yet it works 
and provides the quality I need so I have a way to get this done.

Oh, no, not really. I should thank everyone who actually created the KDE 
imaging infrastructure. Though of course it has some flaws, it in many 
respects eases keeping track of large sets of images a lot! :)
