You are right, that one is not very active :(
In the meantime, could you replace the file open dialog with an input field (or
offer a possibility to edit the URL after selecting it).
Otherwise I wouldn't know how to use this plugin except for exporting to local
media. 
Maybe you can also give some example urls (eg. fish://remote.host/remote/dir or
smb://win-pc/share/images, etc.)
