I cannot reproduce the problem on my system (with Ubuntu's 1.4 version). Can
somebody post debug logs (or send it to me via mail)?

You need to enable logging with "kdebugdialog" utility and enable debugs for
"kipi" and "digikam" levels - just enter it in Search. Then start digikam from
command line (Konsole) and collect output.
