I use the freeglut-080721-20.1 package from the official OpenSUSE 11.1
repository, which contains among others the following files:
/usr/lib/libglut.so.3.8.0

I can post a glxinfo output or anything that could be useful here as soon as
I'm on the computer where the crash occurs, if you give me a hint.

I'm still using the stable 180.29 NVidia drivers (not the beta drivers
mentioned in the discussion thread you referred to), which work otherwise very
well in KDE 4 compositing mode, not other crashes at all a long time.
