that's a conference, not a developer sprint. put simply:

a conference has presentations, broad or even general attendance (usually 
looking for larger numbers rather than smaller) and usually no set 
deliverables beyond presentations, networking, etc.

a developer sprint is a small number of people working on specific issues for 
a specific project or set of related projects for 3-7 days in a given 
location.

if you don't feel the need to get together with a handful of people working on 
your project(s) to collaborate on specific issues for a few days without 
distraction, then indeed you don't need a developer sprint.

but i somehow doubt we'll see an API review of libkipi take place LGM, for 
example.

both conferences and developer sprints have their uses and place; it's good 
not to confuse them with each other.
