I can confirm that this happens. I am using digikam 0.9.2-final (KDE 3.5.8) on kubuntu 7.10 (64  bit), Kipi Library version 0.1.5. 

I have also seen that there is a similar problem using other non-ascii characters such as æåø (Norwegian is great!) 

This bug is really annoying to me since I use both accented characters and æøå (Portuguese and Norwegian). In fact I guess that might be one of the worst 2- language combinations in the latin alphabet languages.
