[Kde-imaging] "SimpleViewer installation failed" & "gallery not found"

I installed 1.8 from digikam. Got an error message on installation of
simpleviewer archive (installation failed). All attempts to use
simpleviewer result in "gallery not found" locally or on server.
Uninstall & reinstall did not work. gallery.xml is not being created.

Using MEPIS (Ubuntu Dapper pools), simpleviewer 1.8, digikam 0.9.0, kipi
0.1.2

Never used this before, have no other ideas. Any suggestions?
