Using xslt for the theming mechanism in kipi's HTMLExport is really powerful, but currently the amount of information included in gallery.xml is very limited. It would give theme designers more freedom and power by including more information in gallery.xml. Currently the only values exported about each image are the title, description, and 3 different sized image files (thumbnail, full and original). The amount of information about the albums or "collections" is even less. As an example, including a date value for each collection would allow to display the collections in the collectionListPage in order. Currently, it is not possible to sort the list of collections in any meaningful way.
Optimally, an expanded standard set of info would be included in the gallery.xml file plus any user-defined tags. Ideas for standard properties to include:
collection description (could be used to show an explanatory paragraph about each album/collection.
collection date (the value should be something that is easily comparable/sortable by xslt)
photographer's name
photographer's contact info (this info could either be included per image, per collection, or once for the whole file)
image rating
image date/time
location
all user-defined tags
Adobe's Lightroom also uses xslt to export HTML based galleries. It might be useful to examine what other options/capabilities Lightroom's export has in order to improve Digikam's export functionality.
