That's not the complete story ;-)

When you are part of KDE, the advantage is that you don't have to make seperate releases anymore. The downside is that you need to honor the freezes of KDE. That means no binary incompatible changes between minor releases (4.0.1/4.0.2) and preferably not between majors (4.0.8/4.1.0). 

That means that as soon as KDE4 is out you basically can not make big changes to libkipi anymore. 

Porting needs to be done anyhow, but keeping two branches is always a pain when one of those branches is under development. So Porting is ok, adding new features to one of the branches would make stuff difficult.

There once was a day, not so long ago, that this list wanted to make big changes to libkipi. I did not see them (i could have missed them), but if everyone is fine with the current libkipi api, then a move is ok. 

I think the maintainers of the apps using it should vote on it.
