This problem is relevant of old digikamplugins (provide with 0.6.x digiKam serie) port to kipi project. This problem do not exist in the old implementation.

I'm right with your suggestion about to solve the problem. Please, can you provide a patch to fix renameimagesdialog.cpp implementation.
