i just talked to gallery developers and here's their response:

"there is a new xmlrpc protocol that will be used for the final release of gallery2 if all goes well. the current g2 remote protocol is a hack so that g1 remote protocol clients could work with little modification. look for a news announcment on gallery.sf.net announcing stability of the xmlrpc protocol for public testing"

so its still a moving target.
