Recently I deserted to a program called AlbumShaper. It is using XML format to store collections of photos. The output plugins can be then written XSLT language allowing simply generate requested output format.

The AlbumShaper is not complete and it is missing features related to the thumbnail sizes, slideshow image sizes etc, but the output generation is simple and very effective. I was able to create my own plugin in one hour.
