Lil' Sis celebrates on April 13 a smashing year in the States
go brit! marks first anniversary with a British bash

The little darling of British fish-and-chips shops is planning a smashing bash on
Saturday, April 13 to celebrate her first anniversary in the States.

go brit! will host a party from 6 to 9 p.m., with plenty of giveaways, fun facts
 and favorite British music performed by Cathy Gorman, dubbed Sussex County's Sweetheart
of Song.

"We have so much to celebrate," said Alison Blyth, owner of go brit! The Lewes eatery
is known as the "Little Sister" to the popular go fish! in Rehoboth Beach.

"From the first day that I opened go fish! in 2002, customers asked for more fish-and-chips
shops. It seems as if everyone wants one on their doorstep," she explained. "Now
 that we have a shop in Lewes, we can see how much people loves this chippy concept."

"Chippy" is the word used in the UK to describe an informal fish-and-chips shop 
that serves quintessentially British favorites. It's clearly a hit in Delaware. 
Blyth hopes to add more go brit! restaurants in coming years. She has promoted the
franchise concept with the line: "Spread the word, more British are coming."

go brit! kicked off its first year with much fanfare, starting with NBC's Today 
morning show host Hoda Kotb cutting the ribbon on April 7, 2012.

After a surprise visit to go brit!, the respected Delaware food critic Patricia 
Talorico raved about the food and called Blyth the "Queen of Fish and Chips."

Enjoy a Friday Fryday tradition that dates back generations

There's nothing nicer than a fish supper any day of the week, although traditionally
fish and chips are the "dish of the day" on Fridays. But just where did this tradition
start? There are many theories to choose from.

Friday is named after the Old Norse God Freya, whose symbol was a fish. The early
Christians also took the fish as their symbol, often scratched into bricks or the
dirt to let fellow worshipers know where to meet in safety and secrecy when practicing
their faith openly was highly risky.

Another theory suggests that fisherman often brought their catch into port on Fridays,
meaning fish was at its very best that day.

In the Middle Ages, meat remained an expensive luxury for most ordinary folk, reserved
for feast days or special occasions like weddings. More recently, when many people
worked in manual jobs and were paid weekly, usually on a Friday, fish and chips 
were an affordable weekly treat.

With modern knowledge of nutrition, we now know fish is a much healthier source 
of protein than most red meat. Fish is low in fat, high in nutrients.If fish isn't
your dish of choice, try crab cakes, fried shrimp or fried oysters - all just as
 good with crispy, golden chips.

meal.
