Fish and chip shops have a long and delicious history

There are many reasons why the combination of fish and chips is so popular in the
UK... let us count the ways! Some are historical, some are financial and some are
just plain practical.

The historical reasons are tied up with the old Roman Catholic tradition of not
eating meat on a Friday, especially in Lent. There are also financial and practical
reasons why "fish and chips" is so popular in the UK. As an island nation, fish
has always been extremely important, particularly in areas on the edge. These include
Scotland, Cornwall, and the counties that border the wild North Sea, traditionally
source of some of the very best cod, haddock and plaice.

Potatoes, relatively easy to grow in the damp and fertile climate, have been popular
for centuries as a cheap, nutritious food, whether boiled, mashed, roasted, or fried
in Irish potato shops in the nineteenth century.

Fried battered fish was invented by the Portuguese, and the Belgians claim they
invented the chip, but their first happy union occurred in the UK in the mid 1800s.
Legend says that an enterprising young Jewish lad called Joseph Malin first sold
the two together. In 1896, Londoner Samuel Isaacs opened the first fish restaurant.
During World War Two, fish and potatoes were amongst the very few foods not subject
to rationing.

Ever since, they've continued to offer fantastic value for money. In a country where
the weather is not exactly predictable, fish and chips are the ultimate in comfort
food.

The wait is over... she's here!

You've heard them around town screaming "She's here! She's here!" and they're rushing
to get through the red doors. Yes, the wait is over. Finally, go brit! fish + chips
- the youngest of the go fish! family of fish-and-chip shops - is up and running.

Opening night on March 8 brought in some 300 people over the course of a few hours
for a packed fundraiser to benefit The Jefferson School, an organization that go
brit! owner Alison Blyth has supported for years.

"We're so happy to have what we call 'Little Sister' here in Lewes. She looks amazing
and everyone loves her vibe," Blyth says.

go brit! was created to serve as a community hub and a place where groups could
regularly hold fundraisers. The restaurant is also set up as a model for a franchise
concept of fast-casual British comfort food.

The eatery serves a reduced menu compared to go fish! and focuses on traditional
fish-and-chip shop fare. It features an interior that mixes old, new and traditional
British décor and pays tribute to iconic London buildings in a vibrant and bold
red-and-grey-toned mural that covers a large wall. There is plenty of brickwork
and modern renditions of London Underground tube signs.

Near the door, a 40-year-old Mini Cooper greets the customers who step up to a gorgeous
wood-stained counter, complemented by stainless steel panels underneath. Leather-toned
booths line a wall of windows with distressed wood tables and Union Jack counter-high
tables sit across the room, adding a splash of color.

Customers order from a modern electronic menu board, which displays menu photos
and shows the process of making the delicious chips.

Come on over and see for yourself what all the talk is about! Don't forget to print
the coupon at the bottom of the page for a 10 percent discount.

See you soon!
