Rick says he would encourage Hispanic young people to work to retain
their Spanish, while indeed getting a solid grounding in English.
Midland is about 27 percent Hispanic or Latino (Odessa is about 40
percent so), and Rick says that while 95 percent of his work is
conducted in English, the five percent or so that requires Spanish is
important, and he has been able to be a real help to some people in
that way. Rick is a confirmed lover of Latin, so very useful in both
English and Spanish. He took four years of it and, in a statewide
Latin contest in 1983, he won first place in Latin vocabulary. He
loves to tell about that win today. A recent proud Midland
accomplishment is the new terminal at Midland International Airport.
While Rick was not city manager when the airport was under
construction, he is pleased that it is now paying its own way—in terms
of passenger facility charges plus rentals from car agencies, the
airlines, and the airport's concessionaires. Rick thinks (and so does
virtually everybody else) the new terminal is a great addition to the
whole region: an impressive gateway for visitors and potential
investors, and a welcome sight when one is on the way home.
