[Kde-i18n-fry] Voorlopige keuze van de termen

I remember that there was a long discussion over bestân vs. triem more than 
one year ago, when this discussion list was still hosted at yahoo. The 
discussion was very emotional, and as far as I remember, it even led to one 
person leaving the team, and several others were very disappointed over the 
style of the list.

As I do not understand Frysk very well, I do not know what the precise meaning 
of "triem" is, apart from computers. The other proposal "bestân" seems to be 
closely derived from the Dutch "Bestand", where I do not really understand 
the image of the word either. But I understand that there are objections 
against imports from Dutch.

In German "Bestand" has a very different meaning, but some people from our Low 
Saxon discussion list, who come from East Frisia, preferred "Bestand" for Low 
Saxon, even though most others did not like that choice so much and were very 
confused by the usual German meaning of "Bestand"

So in a way, we also had a discussion between "Taalpurists" on the one side 
and those who preferred understandability for those who do not know Low Saxon 
well on the other side. In our case we decided to pick "Datei", which is the 
common High German word for "file". The main reason was that it was 
understandable for everyone with a German background. As there did not exist 
an accepted computer vocabulary for Low Saxon at all, when we started, we 
thought that this was important for this one word, for this case. In other 
cases we coined our own words. e.g. for "browser" we chose 
"Nettkieker" (which was inspired from a Norsk examle of "Netbreven" for 
"E-mail").

I think that there are many, many more words in KDE where you can show 
creativity for computer terms and have a realisic chance of shaping computer 
vocabulary for Frysk. So triem vs. bestan might not be the most important 
battleground.

One other question that might be helpful is:
What is the association of "bestand" and of "triem"? The English "file" 
originally meant something like "document", especially a file in a 
drawer/archive. So we searched for other Low Saxon words or possible 
derivations from German into Low Saxon that had to do with documents, 
writings, treaties, patents etc. Unfortunately we did not find a really good 
word. We thought about "Dokment" ("document"), but that word is used 
differently in English. In some cases people seem to make a difference 
between file and document. Document is what you write in a word processor, so 
you can have a PDF-document, a "Word"-document etc. but a "H-document" or 
"cpp-document" would have sounded awkword. 

If you cannot agree on bestan or triem, perhaps all this leads you to ideas 
where to search for more options?
