xdg-user-dir does have it’s own translations and if you look at the german
translation there, you’ll find "Schreibtisch" for "Desktop":

So, I guess you could contact them about this. Not sure how GNOME has
translated Desktop, but if they agree with us, it would be a good idea if
xdg-user-dir would use our translation.
