I too support the decision to do a Breakout clone.

One of my personal favourites is Jardinains!
(http://www.jardinains.com/index2.html) It adds some neat twists
(garden gnomes!) and has a very friendly and playable interface. You
might want to check it out if you're looking for interesting ideas.
Unfortunately it's Windows only and won't run under Wine.
