Patch for cmake (WIP)

That patch looks great so far Daniel!

I am with you on the abandonware part… it’s a lot different for FreeBSD
compared to downstream consumers, which is the need for the split [1]. I’m a
part of a group that suffers from issues in terms of upgrading components, I
think the most conservative thing to do is provide both the 3.x and 4.x
versions and a way to explicitly state that 3.x is required by components so
downstream consumers can get off abandonware versions, while updating to the
latest version of cmake for the lion’s share of their bundled OSS components.

1. Don’t even get me started on python 2 —- I’ve been pushing that boulder
uphill for almost a decade now :(.
