Workaround:
I remembered that I was adding multiple appointments in kontact before the
failure, and this failed -- the appointments were not saved and did not show up
in my online calendar.
Now I replaced all modified akonadi's data & config files in ~/.local and
~/.config with the files from before the failure from ZFS snapshots.  Now
akonadi (and kontact) starts and is fully functional again.

I will file a new bug report upstream concerning that akponadi shoots it's own
data & config when one inserts multiple appointments into an external online
calendar.
