After successfully setting a preference for automated login (as grahamperrin
using Plasma (X11)), I logged out from Plasma, then, at ttyv1 or ttyv0: 

reboot -r

Result: and endless black/blank screen. 

I switched to a tty, logged in as root, stopped SDDM, made the symptom
reproducible by simply starting SDDM (example typescript attached). 

After stopping SDDM I switched to a different tty, logged in as grahamperrin,
startx started Plasma (X11) without difficulty. 

I un-set the preference, then logged out. 

With automated login disabled, SDDM starts Plasma (X11) without difficulty.
