Apparently, setting the CMAKE_ARGS+=-DJAVA_HOME=${JAVA_HOME} does not work. 
But if you check /usr/local/share/cmake/Modules/CMakeFindJavaCommon.cmake you
also see that it can source it from the environment variable JAVA_HOME.

If you set
CONFIGURE_ENV+=        JAVA_HOME=${JAVA_HOME}
then at least the configure stage passes without any issues.

Note: the CMakeLists contains some direct 'java' calls in custom_commands, so
there are likely other issues :)
