I logged out of the GUI, ran "service hald stop" from a vt, then logged in on
the GUI again.  It acted weird immediately, which was actually why I tried the
vt switch that made everything blow up.  If other people are able to use KDE
without hald, I won't worry about it.  Maybe my incantations weren't quite
right.  Thanks.
