I just noticed that there is various other stuff seemingly written by the task
manager to .local/share/sddm/xorg-session.log, most notably long strings of
binary zeros.

Sometimes, instead of crashing, the configuration menu does come up, but
without any decorations - just fields in a black background. In such a case,
the following can be seen in .local/share/sddm/xorg-session.log:
