My bad.

I was not using any nvidia drivers.  I've just installed them and everythings
behaving fine now.  At least so far.

However, that doesn't explain why I started having problems after updating
everything on 18/01/19.

Note, I did consider the possibility that things were very slow, but it seemed
no longer how long I waited for the desktop menus to be filled in, nothing
happened.  They stayed stubbornly transparent.
