In kde@'s github repository -- our ports tree -- there's a branch called 
"whatabout-openexr" which contains my work-in-progress for option-ifying 
OpenEXR. So far:

 - OPTIONS_DEFINE += OPENEXR
 - OPENEXR_LIB_DEPENDS= graphics/OpenEXR

in-progress:

 - OPENEXER_CMAKE_BOOL_OFF to switch off *looking* for OpenEXR at all

in-future:

 - OPTION-ifying the plists
