According to ports r327697 GCC + i386 is broken with -fstack-protector, so
requires a workaround which was removed in ports r430441. If you don't have
time to upgrade atm try staying on RELEASE_9_EOL tag (aka ports r430140).

The build doesn't fail early because maintaining such a conditional still
requires extra effort. The rationale is lost in the following thread:
