I think I found a work-around that fixes *runtime* dynamic linking issues. I
added the following line to /etc/libmap.conf:

libgcc_s.so.1   gcc48/libgcc_s.so.1

This seems to have solved a number of issues that I have had involving
Fortran, including numpy and scilab.
