Sorry for the silence. jhale@ added a patch to area51 to disable file
monitoring, it will be committed with Digikam 2.8.0. If I remember
correctly, it's due to some changes in Digikam, but I think he can
give a better answer. You could also search the archives of kde@ for a
related thread which goes more into details.

SVN commit 8600 by jhale:

Add patch to disable file monitoring since it is causing startup crashes
with large photo collections.  Digikam will still be aware of file creation,
deletion, and renaming of individual files.
