I've been using KDE 4.8.2 from area51 with the patch from Matthew
Rezny for a few days :

With your patch, I can also install qmake4, and all of the dependent
ports seem to build and work fine.

Can't comment on that... I only use the following in /etc/make.conf
(in a couple of .if not pasted here to avoid ports failing with
clang), as advised on the wiki :

CC=clang
.endif
.if !defined(CXX) || ${CXX} == "c++"
CXX=clang++
.endif
.if !defined(CPP) || ${CPP} == "cpp"
CPP=clang-cpp
.endif
