This too fails but at least it has helped point me to the right place... it
appears that xz package was trashed in the upgrade, puzzling since pkg_info

I get this error:
 desktop# /usr/local/kde4/bin/startkde

Error: Can't open display:

I'll get the xz package installed and see how that works.

Of course, you might discount this possibility, but remember that one in
a million chances happen 99% of the time.
