I do not know for sure, but I tought that gamin was supposed to replace fam. 
Gamin is already installed as a replacement for fam and IIRC it conflicts fam.

The gamin-server however is not running on my system, and I haven't looked 
into to making it run on boot, yet. Somehow there is neither a man-page, nor 
post-install-message for gamin that details on how to make it work. Also the 
stupid binary doesnt provide -h or --help :/
