 The problem does seem to be in kdm somewhere.  If I use gdm from
 /etc/ttys and have "exec /usr/local/bin/startkde" in
 /etc/X11/XClients, then gdm can successfully start KDE.  It's
 just that kdm (or kdm-bin) cannot.
