It also doesn't work after adding the kde4 user to the wheel group, relogging
into a text console and restarting kde. The behaviour remains the same.

kdiskfree (kdf) works :)

It works fine with gstreamer as backend.
Some new issues:
- krubick seems to hang upon start (the contours of the window appear, but the
contents remain missing).
- dragon doesn't show the video part of an mpeg video (it plays the
audio correctly).
Running mplayer in kde does show a video window.
- kscd crashes upon start.
On the bright side, starting kde is now a lot faster :) It seems that
it had to write some
initial files?
