Not sort of related: I think you're spot-on. (These settings are probably moot 
on OS X, btw.)

Qt 5.5 does try to pick up settings in qgenericunixtheme, but hasn't been 
updated to include the new paths where those settings are stored by KF5. That 
may be related to what you're seeing.
